Sign Language 1 Online - Deaf Connect

Key Information

All classes are set to Australian Eastern Standard Time during the daylight saving period (Brisbane time).

 

For 6pm classes the set times for each state are QLD 6pm, ACT / NSW / VIC 7pm, NT 5.30pm, SA 6.30pm, WA 4pm.

 

For 10am classes the set times for each state are QLD 10am, ACT / NSW / VIC 11am, NT 9.00am, SA 9.30am, WA 8am.

 

For 1pm classes the set times for each state are QLD 1pm, ACT / NSW / VIC 2pm, NT 12.30pm, SA 1.30pm, WA 11pm.

 

Full price = $230.00 including GST
Concession price = $195 including GST

 

*Centrelink recipients, seniors card holders and full time students at a recognised institution are accepted.

This is a 8 week course.

 

In the event where a face to face or online class needs to be cancelled the course can be extended by 1 week to make up for the missed class.

 

To be eligible to receive a certificate you are required to attend 6 out of 8 classes.

By the end of Sign Language 1, students will be able to:

 

• Greet others and introduce yourself
• Give and request personal details such as phone numbers and addresses
• Count in Auslan
• Fingerspell in Auslan
• Ask and answer simple questions (using “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, etc.)
• Communicate practical vocabulary including colours, days of the week and family
• Express agreement and disagreement
• Use visual-gestural communication strategies
• Identify the Deaf Community
• Explain effective ways of communicating with deaf people

Each week you get access to a brand new video with all the signs for the week, plus a live online class with a deaf teacher where you will practice your Auslan skills for 1-2 hours. You will be in a small, live class through Zoom, interacting with your classmates and teacher. You will need a laptop or desktop computer so that you can see everything clearly (no phones or tablets please).

In order to attend the virtual classes, you require:
• a computer/laptop
• an inbuilt camera or webcam
• have reliable internet connection.

The minimum age to enrol is 18 years. Please contact us for more information.

If you need additional information or support (e.g. wheelchair accessibility), please contact us.

When enrolling, please double check your email address is entered correctly. Email is the primary means by which we will contact you about your course. Please monitor your junk folder for emails from Deaf Connect and if you do not receive an email about your course by at least the day before the scheduled start date, please contact us. You must use separate email address for each registration.

What are the different levels of Community Auslan Classes and what will I learn?
We offer 2 types of classes; Face to Face and Online.
 
FACE-TO-FACE

*  Introduction to Auslan 1 (ITA1)
Introduction to Auslan 1 is designed for people with no previous language skill or knowledge of Auslan.  You will learn basic skills to communicate with Deaf people in Auslan on a range of topics.

*  Introduction to Auslan 2 (ITA2)
Introduction to Auslan 2 is designed to build on the skills and knowledge learnt in the Introduction course.

ONLINE

The online classes are online and are available Australia wide. All classes are set to Australian Eastern Standard Time during the daylight-saving period (Brisbane time).
 
*  Sign Language 1 Online (SL1 Online)
Sign Language 1 Online offers students the unique and fun experience of learning how to communicate visually using Auslan (Australian sign language)

You will learn:

    • Greet others and introduce yourself
    • Give and request personal details such as phone numbers and addresses
    • Count in Auslan
    • Fingerspell in Auslan
    • Ask and answer simple questions (using “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, etc.)
    • Communicate practical vocabulary including colours, days of the week and family
    • Express agreement and disagreement
    • Use visual-gestural communication strategies
    • Identify the Deaf Community
    • Explain effective ways of communicating with Deaf people

 
*  Sign Language 2 Online (SL2 Online)
Sign Language 2 Online continues the unique and fun experience of learning how to communicate visually using Auslan (Australian sign language), the native language of the Australian Deaf Community.

* Sign Online (SOL)
Sign Online offers the flexibility of self-guided and self-paced online learning. You can enrol at any time, study at your own pace via videos and quizzes, and can discuss you learning with other students via the online forum.

Who will be teaching my class?
All our face to face and online Community Auslan classes are taught by a Deaf tutor.
 
What is the cost of the courses?

  • ITA1 / ITA2 - $220 inc. GST and $185 for Concession
  • SL1 / SL2 - $220 inc. GSY and $185 for Concession
  • Sign Online - $165 (ex. GST). There is no concession rate available for Sign Online.
  • DAT Online - $99.00 (ex. GST). There is no concession rate available for DAT Online.

 
How long will the course go for?

  • ITA1 / ITA2 – 8-week course (each weekly lesson is 2hrs long)
  • SL1 / SL2 – 7-week course (each weekly lesson is 1.5hrs long)
  • SOL - You will have 12 weeks to complete the 14 hours of course content online.
  • DAT Online - You will have 4 weeks to complete the 3 hours of course content online.

 
Can I use my NDIS funding to pay for the Community Auslan class?
Yes, absolutely you can. If you wish to use your NDIS funding, please email our Auslan team on auslan.auslan@deafconnect.org.au to gain further information. You won’t be able to register and pay for the Community Auslan class via the website.
 
Are there any pre-requisites to consider before enrolling in Community Auslan classes?

  • The Introduction to Auslan 1 (ITA1) is designed for people with no previous language skill or knowledge of Auslan.
  • Introduction to Auslan 2 (ITA2) has a pre-requisite of completion of Introduction to Auslan 1 or prior Auslan experience.
  • Sign Language 1 Online (SL1) is designed for people with no previous language skill or knowledge of Auslan
  • Sign Language 2 Online (SL2) has a pre-requisite of completion of Sign Language 1 Online or Introduction to Auslan 1

 
Do you get a certificate at the end of the course?
Yes, absolutely. To be eligible to receive a participation statement you are required to attend 6 out of the 8 classes. Bearing in mind that our community classes are non-accredited.
 
Is there a minimum age to enrol in a Community Auslan class?
Yes, the minimum age to enrol in a Community Auslan class is eighteen years of age.
 
Communications relating to the Community Auslan classes?

What do I bring to classes?
For online classes, you can have a notebook and pen handy to take notes if needed.
 
After course finished, do I still have access to Moodle for the content for refreshing and reference?
No, once you have completed the online course your access to Moodle will be removed.
