Welcome to our Auslan Resource Library! 📚 The library features Auslan videos on a variety of day-to-day topics. This video explains what a Tax File Number (TFN) is and how to apply for one. A TFN is your personal reference number in the tax and superannuation systems. 🗂️

[Person 1] Hey, I finally got a job.
[Person 2] Well, congratulations.
[1] Thank you. They’re asking for my TFN. Do you know what that is?
[2] Yes. Your TFN is very important. TFN stands for tax file number. It’s a nine digit number, which is unique to you. That means nobody else will have the same number. Your TFN will remain the same throughout your life, regardless of moving house, changing jobs, or returning from overseas. It doesn’t change. It’s crucial to keep your TFN safe and be cautious. You only share it with the right organisations such as your workplace, bank and government services.
[1] Okay. And how is it linked to my job?
[2] When you earn money, the government will need to track the tax you owe. If you don’t have a TFN, your employer will deduct more tax from your wage. Having a TFN allows you to access government benefits, superannuation, or a tax return, or establish an ABN, which is an Australian Business Number.
[1] Okay, great. So how do I get one?
[2] You can go to the ATO, Australian Tax Office website and apply for your TFN online. If you have a myGovID, the process is even easier. If you don’t, that’s okay, or if you want to apply another way, that’s fine too. You can either go to the post office or apply online. It’s your decision. Why don’t I show you how to apply online for your TFN right now?
[1] Sure.
[2] This is what the ATO website looks like.
[1] Ahh, I see. So, to do this section online, I just enter my personal details like my name, date of birth, address, and contact information like email and phone number. Okay, cool. Then proof of identity documents like my passport, driver’s license, birth certificate. Okay. This process is straightforward.
[2] You’ll need to make sure all of your information is accurate and give consent for the ATO to use that information. You should receive your TFN straight away and you can either download or print it. That’s up to you. Don’t forget it’s important your TFN is only shared with your employers, government services and banks. Remember, your TFN is yours for life, so keep it safe and don’t share it with everyone. Okay?
[1] Thanks.
