Deaf Space can be anywhere — at a festival, a café, or even online! Deaf Space can be where Deaf people come together, to share, celebrate Deaf culture and to shape spaces that work for us.

Our Purpose and Vision
By now, you’ve likely seen information about the Deaf Space project — but you might be wondering why we’ve set this up. It all started in 2022 during Deaf Connect’s national roadshow, where Deaf Space emerged as a key topic for our community. Now, we’re taking the next step!
We’ve brought on a consultant to explore what Deaf Space means for the Australian Deaf community, using both local and international insights. Deaf Space is not something we can decide ourselves. Come along to a community consultation or tell us what you think about what Deaf Space means to you through our survey. We will share our findings with you!
Deaf Space Experts
Melissa Elmira Yingst highlights the need for these spaces to be Deaf-led, inclusive, and rooted in sign language. Dr Breda Carty reflects on how history shapes our sense of place, while Professor Annelies Kusters shows how everyday interactions form community, even as traditional spaces disappear.
