6 Tips for Successfully Studying Online

Published on: 5th June 2024

Studying at home can be both convenient but also challenging. To make the most of your classes and maintain productivity, here are six valuable tips for studying successfully online:

  1. Establish a Dedicated Study Space:
Create a designated study area in your home, a quiet and well-lit space where you can focus and minimise distractions. Keep your study materials organised and readily accessible to maximise efficiency and concentration.
  2. Optimise Your Visual Access:
When attending an online Auslan class, it’s crucial to have good lighting on your face so your facial expressions and signs can be clearly seen.  You will need your webcam the whole time. Ensure your webcam captures the signing space which is the area just above your head and includes your shoulders and upper chest. Having a second monitor can be beneficial for managing Zoom on one screen while simultaneously following the PowerPoint presentation on another, enhancing your learning experience.
  3. Set a Schedule and Stick to It:
Establish a study routine that aligns with your natural productivity peaks. Plan your study sessions in advance, setting specific start and end times. Following a consistent schedule helps you develop discipline, manage time effectively, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  4. Minimise Distractions:
Distractions can quickly derail your concentration and productivity. Silence your phone or put it in another room, close unnecessary browser tabs, and inform family members or roommates about your study hours to minimise interruptions.
  5. Break It Down:
Long study sessions can be overwhelming. Break your study time into manageable chunks, interspersed with short breaks. One common technique is to study for 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break. This approach helps maintain focus and prevents burnout.
  6. Stay Motivated and Reward Yourself:
It’s essential to stay motivated during home study. Set realistic goals and reward yourself upon completion. Celebrate milestones, whether big or small, by treating yourself to a break, a favorite snack, or engaging in an activity you enjoy. Positive reinforcement helps sustain motivation and boosts productivity.

By implementing these tips, you can create an optimal study environment at home, maintain focus, and achieve your learning goals effectively. Remember to be consistent, stay disciplined, and celebrate your progress along the way. With the right approach, studying online can be a rewarding and successful experience.
