Published on: 26th June 2025

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Today’s deep dive focuses on: the Conclave.

The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, leading the church in politics and faith. Recently Pope Francis, who has held his office since his election in 2013, passed away. Now a new pope must be chosen, and cardinals from all around the globe are travelling to Vatican City for a meeting known as the papal conclave, where they will vote on who leads the church next. The process of election and the discussions that occur in the conclave are a closely guarded secret known only to the cardinals.

With the process being so secretive, how will the rest of the world know when a new pope is chosen? Watch now to learn more.
