Auslan90 | Deep Dive | From Waste to Wheelchairs

Published on: 6th January 2026

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Today’s deep dive focuses on The Gift of Mobility: From Waste to Wheelchairs.

Discover how innovator Des La Rance and his team of volunteers are transforming discarded bicycles into life-changing wheelchairs.

In a busy Gold Coast workshop, thousands of abandoned bike frames are reborn as durable, terrain-ready mobility aids for people in crisis. From landfill to lifeline, these wheelchairs are reaching communities devastated by disasters, including Sri Lanka after the recent Cyclone Ditwah.

Watch how passion, ingenuity, and teamwork turn waste into hope – and give freedom to those who need it most. To learn more about the Wheelchair Trust, visit www.wheelchairtrust.org.au
