Auslan90 | Deep Dive | Microbeads and Microplastics

Published on: 26th November 2025

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Have you ever been told not to microwave food in plastic containers, or to steer clear of bottled water and plastic cutlery? With more people becoming conscious of chemicals, additives, and the environmental impact of plastics, it’s natural to wonder: how much of it really matters?

Are we overreacting, or do these tiny particles in plastics – called microplastics – really affect our health and the planet? In this video, we break down the difference between microplastics and microbeads, explore whether it’s safe to consume them even when you can’t see them; we look at the patchwork of bans across Australia, and share some simple tips on what you can do about it.
