Celebrating Cairns NAIDOC Week 2024

Published on: 8th July 2024

Deaf Connect is proud to be the Gold Sponsor for several events during Cairns NAIDOC Week, organised by Deadly Inspiring Youth Doing Good.

This marks the 8th year of our involvement in NAIDOC, a week dedicated to recognising the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week 2024 is from 7th to 14th July, and Deaf Connect was thrilled to provide Auslan interpreting for Friday in the Park, the Elders Luncheon, the NAIDOC Breakfast and the Wuchopperen NAIDOC Community Day celebrations.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

Friday in the Park: had a wide range of community and food stalls, accompanied by live performances. Deaf Connect had a stall and we were thrilled to chat to a range of community members on the day. This event brought everyone together to enjoy local talents and support small businesses.

Elders Luncheon: This was an afternoon filled with music, dance, and good company. Elders enjoyed a two-course meal and live entertainment.

NAIDOC Breakfast: The community gathered to receive presentations from Council Members, including Councillor Trevor Tim from Cairns Regional Council.

Wuchopperen Health Service: again hosted their annual NAIDOC Community Day, once again interpreted by Deaf Connect. The Wuchopperen NAIDOC Community Day featured performances from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance groups, cultural educational games, and family activities.

Deaf Connect is proud to be part of the Cairns Deaf Community and to support this event in 2024. Our team would like to congratulate DIYDG for their work in organising this years’ Cairns NAIDOC and we can’t wait to be involved again in 2025.
