Reflecting on NEW WAVES: A Celebration of Creativity and Inclusivity
Deaf Connect was thrilled to support an incredible Deaf art exhibition in 2024 called NEW WAVES, through our Grants and Sponsorship program!
NEW WAVES brought together the worlds of art, inclusivity, and the lived experiences of the d/Deaf and Hard of hearing community at KEPK Studio in Magan-djin (Brisbane). Running from September 26 to October 9 2024, this inspiring hybrid event showcased the incredible talents of d/Deaf and Hard of hearing artists through visual art, film, and music.
Highlights from the Exhibition
The exhibition featured stunning works by local Deaf artist Katrina Garvey, interstate artist Sue Jo Wright, and emerging visual artists who identify as d/Deaf or Hard of hearing. Visitors were immersed in the beauty and depth of their art, which reflected unique stories and perspectives.
The opening night was a standout moment, offering attendees:
- A preview screening of the powerful short film SOME KIND OF BLUE, written and directed by Rae Choi.
- A keynote speech by Deaf advocate Sophie Li, highlighting the importance of art in connecting communities.
- An immersive sound bath by composer Brodie McAllister, inspired by Rae’s experiences as a Hard of hearing artist.
Deaf Connect provided Auslan interpreters, live captions, and livestream options to ensure accessibility for all.
