Resilient Australia Local Government Award: ‘Get Ready’ Workshops Townsville

Published on: 1st October 2024

We are thrilled to announce that our Get Ready Workshops for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community won the 2024 Resilient Australia Award for Local Government in the Queensland ceremony

This collaboration between Townsville City Council, Townsville SES, and Deaf Connect highlights how essential partnerships like these are in ensuring that the Deaf community is fully included in disaster preparedness in FNQ.

To Eloise and Michelle from Deaf Connect, you were the driving force behind the idea, and it was a great experience to work with you and the Deaf and hard of hearing community. The collaboration with the SES and Deaf Connect proves that it is vital to form these partnerships to be as far-reaching in delivering community preparedness and resilience in disaster management.

To highlight the importance of the work we do… all participants from the event said they were considerably more prepared and ready than those that had not attended.

— Zac Dawes, Acting Team Manager, Emergency Management, Townsville City Council

Our submission will now be judged as part of the National award. Thank you to everyone involved, and we can’t wait to see how this effort grows! We will be looking to continue this important work to prepare the FNQ community for extreme weather events ongoing.
