A Family Networking Event – Deaf Life, Let’s Talk About It!

Published on: 29th May 2024

Are you the parent of a deaf child or work with families who have deaf kids? Are you a young deaf person with questions for members of the Deaf Community? Do you have questions about the Deaf community and want to speak to those with lived experience?

OurDeaf Life: Let’s Talk About It event is a safe, fun space for families to have conversations with diverse members of the Deaf Community to learn more about the deaf experience, language and culture, and get insights into growing up deaf

Inspired by the ‘Human Library’ concept in Denmark, this event will host ‘conversation tables’ between your family and one of our Deaf community members and invites you to ask questions, hear stories, learn more and break barriers.

Come to this event to learn more about:

  • The many different ways of being deaf
  • Growing up deaf
  • Growing up in a Deaf family
  • How to communicate with a deaf child
  • Finding the right career path, or attending mainstream school
  • Importance of having Deaf mentors
  • Deaf Connect’s Family Mentor Service
  • And more!

How does the event run? What to expect on the day:

  • Head to the welcome table upon arrival where our friendly hosts will greet you and help you book conversations. Our hosts have expertise in working with and empowering families with deaf children. A catalogue with information about Deaf community members will be available for you to flick through, and the hosts will be there to answer any questions and can recommend who may be best for you meet.
  • Be guided to a ‘conversation table’ with multiple seats, pens and paper, where you’ll meet a Deaf Community member
  • Hear their stories, chat through your questions and broaden your understanding.
  • Our Deaf volunteers will engage kids in conversations, so you can bring the whole family along!
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing young people, including teens and pre-teens, are welcome to come and ask questions of Deaf Community members
