Study Options

This course is delivered online only (live virtual classroom via Zoom).

Classes will be 5 hours per week (split into 2.5 hours over 2 evenings). You will also be expected to watch a 1-hour pre-recorded video each week before your class.

The online class sessions are timetabled in your Course Guide (see below). Outside this time, students are also expected to set aside approximately 25 – 30 hours per week for individual study, online learning, your own review of information from class activities, research and preparation of assessments, and on-the-job learning.

Support Services

This course is delivered in English. Deaf Connect will provide Auslan interpretation for all weekly classes and video lectures, weekend workshops, and any planned assessment catch-up days.

Deaf Connect may also make reasonable adjustments to accommodate students with disability, where possible. The adjustment made will be determined on a case-by-case basis after assessment of the individual need(s) of the student.

You can find more information in our Support Services Policy or in our Student Handbook.

Outcome

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Provide individualised support and follow safe work practices for direct client care,
  • Communicate and work in health or community services, aged care and disability support,
  • Support independence and wellbeing, and facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support,
  • Support community participation and social inclusion,

  • Work legally and ethically,
  • Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control,

  • Contribute to ongoing skills development.

Your enrolment in the course does not guarantee that you will successfully complete or that you will obtain a particular employment outcome where it is outside of Deaf Connect’s control.

You must have successfully completed all units in order to be issued with an AQF [Australian Qualifications Framework] certification documentation for CHC33021 – Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability).

Entry

There are no occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements applicable to this qualification at the time of publication on the National Register.

However, work placement facilities may require you to have some or all of the following:

  • COVID-19 and / or influenza vaccination,
  • Disability worker screening relevant to your state,
  • Police clearance check,
  • The physical ability to walk for extended periods during aged care shifts.

You can find more information in the Course Guide in the ‘Course Documents’ tab.

Duration & Language

The duration of this course is over two semesters – 27 weeks:

  • Term 1 – 9 weeks
  • Term 2 – 10 weeks
  • Term 3 – 8 weeks

This course is delivered in English by hearing trainers, and Deaf Connect will provide Auslan interpretation throughout the duration of the course. See Support Services for further information.

Weekend Workshops

Students will be required to attend two (2) Weekend Workshops during this course. The location of these workshops is yet to be determined and will be confirmed upon review of the enrolments received.

The first Weekend Workshop will take place from Saturday, 22nd February 2025 to Sunday, 23rd February 2025.

The second Weekend Workshop will take place from Saturday, 10th May 2025 to Sunday, 11th May 2025.

Note:
The Weekend Workshops are not included in your course fees. These workshops form part of your course, and your attendance is required to complete the practical components of your assessment tasks.

The Weekend Workshops are not residential, so you are responsible for sourcing, coordinating and subsidising your own travel and accommodation for these weekends.

Work Placement

To achieve this qualification, you must complete at least 120 hours of work placement, performing direct support work in both an aged care and a disability organisation. Given the dual specialisation of Ageing and Disability, your work placement must provide access to both elderly clients and clients with disabilities.

Your current employment status in the industry will determine the number of work placement hours you will be required to complete as part of this course.

Existing worker
If you are already working in the industry and have access to both elderly clients and clients with disabilities, you will need to provide us with some evidence (see Enrolment Documents below). We will assess the evidence you provided to determine if your existing work can count towards the 120 hours of work placement, and you may not be required to volunteer additional time outside of your usual work.

Non-existing worker
If you are not currently working in the industry, you must find a suitable facility/organisation and have it approved by Deaf Connect. Whilst Deaf Connect will assist where possible, this support is not guaranteed. Your work placement should commence after the successful completion of all your units (approximately July 2025).

Material & Equipment

You need to have access to the following:

  • Laptop or desktop computer with reliable internet connection
  • Filming device (webcam, handheld camera or smartphone)
  • Word processing and presentation software(s) to make presentations or complete your assessments (Microsoft Word or Google Docs and Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides)
  • PDF reader (download PDF reader for free)
  • Access to Zoom
  • Access to Moodle – instructions will be provided prior to the commencement of the course
  • Access to printer and scanner – if you are not familiar with document editing
  • Pen and notepad

Note:
Our Learning Management System (Moodle) is not easily accessible from smart phones or tablets and is best accessed on a laptop or desktop computer. Due to the way our courses are structured, the Moodle App for either Apple or Android is NOT SUITABLE for studying Deaf Connect courses. You are at risk of not seeing all learning materials in full when attempting to access them via a mobile phone or tablet.

For blended courses, laptops are preferred rather than phones or tablets and you may need to hotspot from your phone. For online only courses, you MUST use a laptop or desktop computer and your screen must be of adequate size (about 23” – 24”) in order for you to clearly see your trainer and classmates. We recommend you use two monitors: one for the PowerPoint and one for your Zoom class.

Communication with Deaf Connect

Email is the primary means by which we will contact you about your course, e.g. to confirm a course once minimum enrolment numbers are achieved, or cancel if we do not receive enough enrolments.

Please ensure you enter your email address correctly at the time of enrolment.
Please also monitor your Junk folder for emails from Deaf Connect. If you do not receive an email about your course by at least the day before the scheduled start date, please contact us.
