Introduction to Auslan 2

Introduction to Auslan 2 is designed to build on the skills and knowledge you gained in our first Introduction to Auslan class. In this class, you’ll take a deeper look at grammatical structure and explore the culture of the Deaf community. 

We recommend this course for students who have completed Introduction to Auslan 1 or have some prior experience with Auslan. 

Our beginner classes are easy, fun, and relaxed. All our classes are taught by a Deaf tutor in a supportive, ‘voice-off’ environment. This approach creates a fully immersive experience, which is the best way to learn Auslan. You can choose to join us in person or learn online from home.

By the end of Introduction to Auslan 2 , you will be able to:

    • Sign about holidays, the weather and the seasons 
    • Sign everyday life including work and family 
    • Share information about hobbies, interests and other activities 
    • Use more advanced visual-gestural communication strategies 

This course assumes that you have completed Introduction to Auslan 1 or have some prior Auslan experience. If you have previously studied another beginner level Auslan course, Introduction to Auslan 2 could be right for you. 

  • Face-to-face classes: Meet for 2 hours once per week, for eight weeks. 
  • Guided online classes: Join a virtual class for 2 hours once per week, for eight weeks. 
  • Auslan intensive classes: Learn in person for 4 hours per day, over four consecutive days. 

Your tutor will be Deaf. They will not use spoken English. All our classes are taught in a supportive, ‘voice-off’ environment. This approach creates a fully immersive experience, which is the best way to learn Auslan. 

Please note: In special circumstances, such as extreme weather, we may move a face-to-face class online to ensure the safety of our students and staff. 

To make sure you have the best learning experience, here’s a list of what you will need. 

For all classes, you will need: 

  • A pen and notepad for taking notes. 
  • A laptop or desktop computer with a reliable internet connection to access our online student portal, Moodle. We will send you instructions on how to log in before your course begins. 
  • A PDF reader to view course materials. 

For online classes, you will also need: 

  • A webcam, as our classes are visual and interactive. 
  • A stable internet connection. 

Please note that our online learning system, Moodle, is designed for use on a laptop or desktop computer. To ensure you can see all course materials and participate fully, we do not recommend using a mobile phone or tablet. 

We will send information about your course to you via email. When you enrol, ensure that your email address is correct. 

Sometimes, our emails can get lost in your junk or spam folder. To make sure you receive everything, please keep an eye on these folders.

*Centrelink recipients, seniors card holders, and full-time students at a recognised institution are considered for concession price.

This course can be funded using your NDIS plan. Learning Auslan must be connected to the disability listed in your NDIS plan. Your NDIS plan should state a goal of learning Auslan or improving communication.

You must be at least 16 years of age to enrol. If you are under 18 years of age, parent or legal guardian permission is required and will be sought upon enrolment.

We offer two beginner levels to start you on your Auslan journey. 

Introduction to Auslan 1 (ITA1) 

This class is the perfect starting point if you have no previous experience with Auslan. You will learn the basic skills needed to have simple, everyday conversations with Deaf people. 

Introduction to Auslan 2 (ITA2) 

This course is designed to build on what you learned in the first class. You will explore more detailed grammar and learn more about the culture of the Deaf community, helping you to have more meaningful conversations. 

Certificate in Auslan II 

After completing ITA2, you may choose to continue your journey with a Certificate in Auslan — this is a qualification that opens the door to proficient Auslan use and employment opportunities such as interpreting.  

Who will be teaching my class? 

All our Beginner Auslan classes, both face-to-face and online, are taught by a Deaf tutor. 

Are there any prerequisites for beginner classes? 

  • Our Introduction to Auslan 1 (ITA1) class is designed for anyone with no previous experience or knowledge of Auslan. 
  • For Introduction to Auslan 2 (ITA2), you will need to have completed the first course or have similar beginner Auslan experience. 

Will I get a statement of participation at the end of the course? 

Yes, you will. You will receive a statement of participation if you attend at least six of the eight classes. Please note that our beginner courses do not give you a qualification in Auslan. 

What happens if my class is cancelled? 

If we ever need to cancel a face-to-face or online class, we will simply extend the course by one week to make up for the missed session. 

What resources are included in the online course? 

Each week, you’ll unlock a new video that teaches you all the signs for that week’s topics. You will also join a live online class with a Deaf tutor for one to two hours to practice your new skills. These small, interactive classes are held on Zoom, allowing you to connect with your tutor and classmates. 

Will I have access to the materials after the course ends? 

No, your access to the Moodle student portal will end once the course is complete. We encourage you to take notes during your class to help you remember what you’ve learned. 

Which Online Class Should I Choose? 

When you enrol in an online class, please check the class times carefully. All times listed have been adjusted for daylight savings to match the correct time zone for each state. 

For students in the Northern Territory, you can enrol in any of the Queensland (QLD) classes and join at 6:00pm NT time. Alternatively, you can join a South Australia (SA) class at 5:30pm NT time.
