What is Deaf Space?

Deaf Space can be anywhere — at a festival, a café, or even online! Deaf Space can be where Deaf people come together, to share, celebrate Deaf culture and to shape spaces that work for us.

Deaf spaces are for you, shaped by Deaf culture and community.

Our Purpose and Vision

By now, you’ve likely seen information about the Deaf Space project — but you might be wondering why we’ve set this up. It all started in 2022 during Deaf Connect’s national roadshow, where Deaf Space emerged as a key topic for our community. Now, we’re taking the next step!

We’ve brought on a consultant to explore what Deaf Space means for the Australian Deaf community, using both local and international insights. Deaf Space is not something we can decide ourselves. Come along to a community consultation or tell us what you think about what Deaf Space means to you through our survey. We will share our findings with you!

Community Consultations

We imagine Deaf Space is where we come together, learn, share information, and experience Deaf culture — whether that’s face-to-face at festivals and workshops, online on Zoom, or anywhere Deaf people gather.

We’re holding consultations in February and March 2025 to explore what Deaf Space means to you:

In-person across Australia: Morning and evening sessions (Auslan only).
Online: Zoom sessions (options with and without interpreters).
