Auslan90 | Deep Dive | Skype Shutdown

Published on: 10th March 2025

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Today’s deep dive focuses on Skype Shutdown.

After its launch in 2003, Skype quickly became a household name for online voice and video calls. It set the standard for online communication early and grew to millions of users worldwide.

Now, Skype is owned by Microsoft, who announced it will soon be shutting down the service. While there are other video calling platforms available, some people and organisations still rely on Skype, including the National Relay Service’s video interpreting system.

Watch to learn how Skype users will be impacted by the closure.
