Need a short explainer about National Sign Language Program (NSLP) funding?

The National Sign Language Program is a new name for some of the free interpreting services that Deaf seniors may have used previously. If youre unsure what the National Sign Language Program (NSLP) is, or how to receive funding for free interpreting and live captioning services, here’s a brief explainer of the recent changes to this program!

Watch this video for more information:

The NSLP now provides many of the services that were previously delivered by NABS. NABS no longer provides free medical interpreting – but you can receive the same free services, and more through the NSLP.

The only difference for you is who to contact to book your interpreter – now you must book through Deaf Connect.

How have medical bookings changed? 🤔

You can still access free medical interpreting. While you’ll need to book interpreters through Deaf Connect for private medical appointments, including seeing your GP, podiatrists, physiotherapists or any other specialist, it’s the State Government’s responsibility to book interpreters for public hospitals to ensure that there is Auslan access. 👩‍⚕️🩺🏥

Remember, NSLP is not just about medical interpreting. Deaf seniors can use NSLP funding for financial planning appointments, going to the bank, social events, funerals and more.
