This video has been produced to help guide you, in learning more about the medical history of your family. Knowing about the medical history of your family, is important to you and your future health. See this family tree, it includes a personβs parents, aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents. The various generations. It is of such value to know more about your family and if there are any health or medical conditions. The reason for this, is that health or medical conditions can be passed down within a family. If you are aware of these, then you can put steps in place, to prevent or closely monitor any symptoms.
Some examples of conditions that can be passed down within a family are: heart disease, stroke, cancer β breast, prostate, liver and other types of cancers, diabetes, and other conditions that are listed here. There may be higher risks in your family of these types of illnesses, which is important information for you to be aware of. Something may appear in your family but that doesnβt mean you will definitely have this condition. Or on the other hand you may be fall ill and there may be no connection to anyone else in your family. It can depend on your body and your health. It is so valuable knowing the medical history of your family because this means you can keep a close eye on any symptoms and seek regular testing.
Take the time to speak with various family members and ask questions about your family health history. Record these down and then share this information with your GP. The value in doing that is your doctor will record this information in your file and ensure regular checks and tests are completed. For example in your family there may be a higher rates of breast cancer, by informing your GP of your family history of breast cancer, your doctor will then ensure regular check-ups are completed, like mammograms, blood tests, checking for lumps, and other tests.
You may never have the particular condition that occurs in your family or by being aware of it, this may lead to early diagnosis, which could prevent the condition being more severe. Understanding more about the medical history of your family could result in the saving of your life. It is also valuable information you can then pass on to future generations within your family, your children, grandchildren and others.Β
