Deaf Connect launches Auslan90 | Australia’s first daily news bulletin in Auslan
We are excited to announce our new pilot project called Auslan90. The video above talks about what to expect from these video updates and when you will see them.
Starting from Monday 30th September, we will be releasing daily short news bulletins in Auslan from Monday to Friday at 1pm. The videos will be on YouTube, Facebook and other platforms.
On the weekend we will post a longer Deep Dive video which will go into more detail on a news topic.
This news will be delivered in Auslan only and is developed with an Auslan-first approach.
Auslan90 is produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS News and funded by the Federal Government Department of Social Services Information, Linkages and Capacity Building Program.
Transcript:
Hello. You may have seen our post recently about “Auslan 90”. Auslan 90 is an Auslan only News segment that’s been sponsored by the Australian government under its ILC program.
SBS will be supporting this program by supplying the team with the news segments to be presented. SBS is an unbiased news organisation, providing factual information. Importantly, their focus is on serving linguistically and culturally diverse communities. Auslan 90 will be news that is only presented in Auslan. People who speak other languages have many media forms through which to access the news, such as TV, radio, newspaper, Facebook, websites and other mediums.
They can read the news or they can listen to the news. And this is not just available in English but many other spoken languages such as Arabic, Malaysian or Mandarin. But, the information available in Auslan is very limited. It is so exciting to announce that Auslan 90 news will be published each day from Monday to Friday at 1pm in the afternoon. It will be a summary of the news of the day in 90 seconds. Further to this, once a week, there will be a more in-depth segment focussed on one news story.
This will last for 3 to 4 minutes. This is a very exciting initiative. The process to create this Auslan news segment will be different to how other news is presented. A team will receive the news stories from SBS and they will discuss the new stories as a team in Auslan. From that rich discussion, the team will then create the 90 second long Auslan summaries and post the resulting videos every day Monday to Friday. This is very different to what’s currently available. The Auslan 90 videos will be posted at 1:00pm each weekday on YouTube, Facebook and other online platforms. Importantly the videos will only be in Auslan, without any English captions or voiceover.
That’s because people who can access English already have other sources and other mediums through which to access that new story. Auslan 90 is focusing only on the Deaf Community who sign Auslan. This is an incredibly exciting, new opportunity to have the news presented on a regular basis, Monday to Friday in Auslan. As this is a new initiative the team will obviously have to make adjustments over time to make sure they’re getting it right. But your feedback is greatly appreciated because it will assist the team to know what’s working and what needs to be improved. Remember, this is only a 9-month project for now, but it will so valuable for us to see the news every day in Auslan.
We’re very excited to share this with all of you.
