How We Support You

Our counselling service supports client’s mental health and emotional wellbeing by using a myriad of different therapy modalities and client-focused approaches. Counselling is an early intervention service, meaning we place priority on supporting parents and their children through every stage.

Deaf Connect counsellors work closely with participants to:

  • Understand thoughts, feelings and relationships
  • Strengthen emotional awareness and build ways to cope
  • Set goals and stay on track
  • Improve communication skills
  • Navigate big changesdecisions or challenges

How is Counselling Different to Social Work or Psychology?

Understanding the difference between a counsellor, a social worker and a psychologist can be confusing. Below is a short guide to help you when navigating these services:

Assessments

  • A counsellor can offer tentative assessments and personality-type assessments.
  • A social worker can offer psychosocial assessments to support capacity building.
  • A psychologist can provide diagnostic assessments for medical conditions.

Practical support

  • A counsellor focuses on therapeutic support for your mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • A social worker advocates for families, liaises with external agencies, provides referrals and conducts follow up services to support the entire family.
  • A psychologist addresses any behavioural, emotional, mental or parental needs for the child and family.
