Aged Care Changes are starting from July 1

Published on: 11th March 2025

The government has announced several changes coming to Aged Care in Australia. There will be some major changes for older people living in the community receiving government-subsidised services.

Deaf Connect will provide resources about these changes over the coming weeks, and clients can also talk to their support planners.

The big changes include:

  1. A New Aged Care Act: this sets out how the aged care system operates. It changes how some services are delivered, and makes sure aged care is delivered safely and respectfully.
  2. Stronger Aged Care Quality Standards: to protect seniors and hold services to a high standard.
  3. A Statement of Rights: this is part of the new Aged Care Act. It outlines the rights older people have in the aged care system.
  4. Introducing Support at Home: from 1 July 2025, Support at Home will replace Home Care Packages. This is a new system for delivering support services so older people can stay independent in their homes for longer.

The changes to aged care are designed to ensure that older people receive the support they need in their homes, while being safe, respected, and having their needs fully understood. Deaf Connect will continue delivering in-home supports to Deaf seniors and making sure these supports are accessible in Auslan.
