Auslan90 | Deep Dive | Preferential Voting System | Federal Election 2025

Published on: 24th April 2025

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Today’s deep dive focuses on Preferential Voting System | Federal Election 2025

Voting in Australia’s federal election is more than just ticking a box. Australia uses a preferential voting system, which means every voter must rank candidates in order of preference — not just pick one. It’s one of the most complex voting systems in the world, especially when it comes to counting the votes and deciding who gets a seat in Parliament.

So, how does preferential voting actually work? And what’s the difference between the small green ballot paper for the House of Representatives and the large white one for the Senate? Watch the video to find out.

This project is funded by the Federal Government Department of Social Services Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program.
