This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.
In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.
Today’s deep dive focuses on ‘ What is a Sovereign Citizen’.
Recently, all eyes have been on a small town in Victoria as the hunt for alleged killer Dezi Freeman continues. But Freeman’s conflict with police started long before his rash actions drew national attention. He is part of a growing movement of “sovereign citizens” – people who believe they should be above or separate from the laws that govern where they live.
While the modern concept began in the USA, it has become increasingly popular in Australia over recent years. Experts warn that there is a dark underbelly to the movement, and that it has grown by targeting vulnerable people. Watch now to learn more.
This project is funded by the Federal Government Department of Social Services Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program.
