This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.
In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.
Today’s deep dive focuses on the ‘Optus Outage’.
Optus has faced major outages recently – including one in NSW and others across WA, NT, and QLD – affecting thousands of people and blocking some from calling triple-zero (000) in emergencies. The failures are raising serious concerns, with reports that missed emergency calls were linked to four deaths.
Australia’s telco watchdog is now investigating how the network failed and why emergency calls didn’t go through. Meanwhile, political leaders and experts are questioning who should be responsible for ensuring 000 calls always work – and how outages are reported and fixed fast.
