This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.
In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.
Today’s deep dive focuses on a growing group of Australians managing conflicting caring duties.
More and more Australians are feeling the bite of the ‘Sandwich Generation’ – caught between caring for ageing parents and raising children at the same time. With the average lifespan lengthening and more Australians having children later in life, this dual role is taking a toll on their everyday lives.
The Australian Seniors’ Sandwich Generation Report 2025, published in June, highlights that 90% of Australians in the Sandwich Generation have experienced signs of burnout, spending on average nearly 30 hours jugging care responsibilities. This can lead to mental, emotional, physical and financial strain. While their contributions often go unseen, Carers Australia notes that this unpaid care plays a significant role in supporting the Australian economy.
