Clarice’s Story I Navigating ‘Aussie life’ through Support Work

Published on: 12th February 2025

Accessing Support Work at Deaf Connect opened opportunities for Clarice to meet her goals to:

  • Navigate Australian life
  • Connect with her community and
  • Explore her interest in art and literature.

Clarice’s Story:

“I was born profoundly deaf. Later in life I sadly had a bike accident which led to a brain injury. So, I need additional supports just to help me with my memory and help me navigate general community life.

I come from the Philippines and my support workers have understood that I need extra supports to navigate what’s happening here in Australia and the community.”

Navigating Australian culture, books, community events and grocery shopping

“So, my support worker helps me identify things that are unique to the Australian culture and the language that’s used here; they take me out to different supports, they’ll show me the local area and that’s really helping me understand what’s going on. When I go food shopping, things are different here, so they’re explaining labels and prices to me.

“I’ll go to the local libraries and have a look around there and understand more about Australian culture and Australian life. And it’s just great to talk to somebody about how things are done here in Australia.”

 Finding the ‘right’ support worker

“Someone had recommended Deaf Connects support services. My husband then helped me make a few phone calls to Deaf Connect and made contact with them.”

“I wanted a hearing support worker that was fluent in sign language. They assigned me Sussan, who’s now my support worker, and we get on so well. I’m so comfortable with her.”

“I enjoy looking at art and we share that in common, the fact that we can sit there and just talk about art concepts.”

 Connecting with her community

“They (support workers) send me reminders and they’ll also send me relevant information about what’s going on with the community, which I find very, very helpful.”

I like Deaf Connect support worker services, they’re always happy.

I am so satisfied with Deaf Connects Service and the supports that they provide for the community and myself, and I’m so appreciative and so happy with their support.
