Every customer, client, and colleague deserves to feel understood. Yet many workplaces miss simple ways to communicate well with deaf and hard of hearing people. These gaps can affect service, trust, and connection every day.
Deaf Awareness Training helps close that gap. It gives your team the knowledge and practical tips they need to communicate with confidence. Here’s why it’s a smart choice to add it to your Learning and Development calendar.
What Is Deaf Awareness Training?
Deaf Awareness Training provides essential development to staff so they can become confident communicators with deaf and hard of hearing people. This results in better everyday interactions with clients, customers and colleagues.
Deaf Connect delivers Deaf Awareness Training through live sessions—face-to-face or online via Zoom—and self-paced online modules. Every live session is led by an experienced deaf trainer, with professional interpreters providing access for everyone. Your team learns directly from people who live the deaf experience every day.
Benefits of Workplace Deaf Awareness Training
Deaf Awareness Training suits any organisation that wants to be more inclusive and accessible. It’s especially valuable for teams in:
- Health and hospitals
- Aged care and disability services
- Government and community services
- Corporate and customer service environments
Deaf Awareness Training helps your team develop an understanding of the barriers that deaf people face and equips your team with the tools to better support access to information for deaf people. The result is clearer communication and increased engagement.
Here’s how it helps your workplace:
- Breaks down communication barriers between staff and deaf and hard of hearing clients
- Greater access to your services; supports deaf and hard of hearing people in making more informed decisions about your products or services
- Develops staff confidence, so your team feels capable, not unsure
- Makes meetings and services more accessible for everyone
- Strengthens your reputation as an inclusive, forward-thinking organisation
- Improves accessibility and diversity within the workplace
- Builds cultural awareness and strengthens psychosocial safety

This is what sets Deaf Connect’s Deaf Awareness Training apart. Classes are led by deaf trainers and delivered in Auslan, with interpreters providing access for everyone.
Your staff learn from people with genuine lived experience. They also see high-quality interpreting in action, which shows how inclusive communication really works. It’s authentic, practical, and far more memorable than reading a policy.

Subsidies for Accessibility Training
You may be able to access financial support to provide Deaf Awareness Training to your organisation. Options may include:
- Employment Assistance Fund (EAF): If you support a deaf employee, you may be eligible to have training costs reimbursed by the Australian Government through the EAF, administered by JobAccess.
- NDIS funding: This may be possible where the training directly supports a participant’s goals around social or community participation. The plan needs a goal that refers to awareness training.
It’s worth checking your eligibility early to make the decision easier.
