Week two at the Gallaudet University Immersion Program (GUIP) brought fresh insights into Deaf history, culture, and community. The team visited the deaf-run Starbucks, experiencing Deaf-friendly technology and art in a welcoming space built for visual communication. Our participants report that the coffee couldn’t compare to our Australian brews!
A standout moment was the history lecture on the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement. Harvey Goodstein and Phil Bravin shared personal stories from this pivotal protest, a landmark in the fight for Deaf representation and leadership. Their words brought home the ongoing importance of advocacy and self-determination in the Deaf community.
Alongside learning and exploring, our participants met to plan a new deaf studies course for the Australian Deaf Community inspired by their time at Gallaudet. Watch the updates in the video below and stay tuned for more this week!
