Chris grew up deaf and Auslan was his first language. He used Auslan for communication throughout his schooling and has been teaching at Deaf Connect for four years.
“What I love about teaching Auslan, is it is a truly beautiful language. I teach the students about the Deaf community, our language, culture and history. I love seeing students grow from not knowing anything about Auslan to becoming proficient. It’s like planting a seed, watering it and watching it grow into a tree” says Chris.
Prior to working with Deaf Connect, Chris attended university and studied cognitive science, which he found fascinating, however, his passion lies in sharing his language and culture with his students.
When asked about teaching Auslan as a career, Chris says he loves working in a collaborative environment, where he is able to inspire his students. He also values the flexibility of the role and its ability to fit into his lifestyle. He goes onto say “to those that are interested in teaching I would encourage you to join us because it’s a wonderful environment to work in.”
Chris’ advice to those considering a career in teaching Auslan is that “you need a passion for teaching and for sharing your language, culture and history”. If you think a career in teaching Auslan is for you can find out more and apply now by visiting our careers page here.
