This NAIDOC Week, we invite everyone to celebrate and recognise the rich culture, identity and connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the land.
It’s a privilege to share the story of Tegan Blanch, a proud Gumbaynggirr woman, accomplished athlete and Ambassador for the 2026 Australian Deaf Games.
Growing up, sport was more than competition for Tegan – it was a way to connect with her community, build teamwork and stay true to her family’s strong sporting tradition.
Over the years, she has proudly represented both Deaf and hearing communities at championships, the Deaflympics and World Deaf Sports events. Today, Tegan is passionate about opening doors for the next generation of Deaf athletes.
At the recent Australian Deaf Games ‘1 Year to Go’ event, Tegan joined Deaf Connect’s General Manager of Community & Capacity, Andrew Wiltshire, to share reflections on her journey so far and her experiences in sport and community representation.
NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme calls on all of us to honour the wisdom of our Elders and support young leaders to carry that strength, vision and legacy forward.
Tegan’s story is a powerful example of what this looks like in action.
Let’s recognise, respect and learn from the oldest living culture on earth.
