This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.
In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.
Today’s deep dive focuses on recent advancements in AI video generation.
Two years ago, AI-generated videos like a spaghetti-eating Will Smith were distorted and unsettling. By July this year, a new version was so realistic that Smith himself called it “absolutely perfect and photo-real”. OpenAI’s Sora 2 is now flooding social media with lifelike clips of celebrities, deceased figures, and copyrighted characters – some almost impossible to tell apart from real life.
In Australia, the app is not currently available, and the government has drawn a line: technology companies won’t get a “free pass” to use creative works. Meanwhile, creatives are calling for stronger protections to shape AI’s future. To find out more, watch the video now.
