Auslan90 | Deep Dive | Tuvalu Could Sink in 75 Years

Published on: 7th August 2025

This is Auslan90 – Deep Dive, produced by Deaf Connect, supported by SBS.

In addition to our Daily news, Deaf Connect produces ‘deep dive’ videos which provide more detail and context to the biggest stories of the week.

Today’s deep dive focuses on the Pacific Nation of Tuvalu. Did you know, Tuvalu is likely to be the first country in the world where people may no longer be able to live due to climate change? Scientists fear that 95 percent of the country could be underwater by the year 2100. To help, Australia has signed a historic agreement with Tuvalu, the Falepili Union treaty, offering permanent residency to its citizens. Over 5,000 people – roughly half of the population – have applied for through a ballot process. As the effects of climate change continue, this island nation’s fate may serve as a warning for the world. Watch to learn more.

This project is funded by the Federal Government Department of Social Services Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program.
