Ageing Well: Audrey’s Story

Published on: 11th August 2025

For many older Deaf people, having access to support in Auslan is not just helpful – it’s essential.

It means being able to understand important information, make decisions, and stay connected to the community.

That’s why services like Ageing Well matter. Our team works with Deaf seniors to provide care that fits individual needs – including help at home, social visits, transport, and organising interpreters for appointments.

Audrey, who is a 93-year-old Ageing Well participant, shared what this service looks like for her.

“I have support workers who are Deaf and use Auslan. This helps make my life easier, because communication is so important – especially in situations when I need to make decisions about my health or the kinds of support I receive in my home.”

Audrey lives in Brisbane, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and close friends, and has used our home care services for several years.

“My support workers arrange interpreters for my medical appointments – since most doctors don’t know Auslan.”

Recently, Audrey’s Home Care Package was upgraded to Level 3, giving her more support – like physiotherapy, cleaning, meals, transport, and social activities.

Audrey is also very social, regularly visiting Deaf Connect’s Brisbane office for events and activities.

“Some of my hobbies include playing cards, puzzles, reading and watching the news. I also spend time with my family, who come and visit me.”

“Every fortnight I love to attend the Deaf Craft group at Deaf Connect – and different Deaf events like playing cards, socialising and more.”

It’s wonderful to see people like Audrey staying connected and independent.
