It’s Time to Vote in NSW This Saturday!

The NSW local government elections are being held this Saturday, September 14. Voting is compulsory, and it’s an important way to contribute to your local community. Here’s everything you need to know.

  • Local Government elections will be held on Saturday, 14 September. 
  • Voting is compulsory.

New South Wales is divided into local government areas. Each local government area is managed by a council and voters in each area elect people to represent them on the council. 

You must enrol to vote if you are 18 years old and over, and an Australian citizen.  

The New South Wales electoral roll is jointly managed by the NSW Electoral Commission and the Australian Electoral Commission. You can enrol to vote, check your enrolment details and update your information online by visiting aec.gov.au 

For the 2024 Local Government elections, you can vote: 

  • in person before election day at a pre-poll location 
  • in person on election day, or 
  • if you are eligible, by postal vote. 

The NSW Electoral Commission provide an Auslan interpreter service during voting hours on election day Saturday, 14 September. The NSW Electoral Commission can be contacted via Skype using Skype account NSWelections Auslan or NSWelections Auslan2. 

The NSW Electoral Commission can be contacted via the National Relay Service (NRS) during standard office hours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. Choose your access option and ask for 1300 135 736.
