How We Can Help
Our team of Speech and Language Pathologists support families of deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as Deaf adults though studying, diagnosing and treating communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using their voice. They have specialised knowledge in language, communication, and the social/emotional development of deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as the impact of deafness on development. We work collaboratively with families, professionals and other service providers to provide a well rounded transdisciplinary, bilingual, and bicultural approach to support deaf children to reach their academic and social potential.
This includes supporting children and Deaf adults to:
- Develop listening and comprehension skills.
- Use words and then sentences to express themselves and participate in their community.
- Improve the clarity of the speech sounds they produce.
- Understand the meaning of spoken language.
- Learn to read and write.
- Use augmentative and alternative communication when this is the most appropriate way for communication.
- Pay attention to others when they are communicating.
- Develop safe and mature eating patterns, when this is problematic.

Our Team
Deaf Connect Speech & Language Pathologists work alongside our multidisciplinary teams in Brisbane, Townsville, Mackay, and through Telehealth. By adopting a bilingual/bicultural approach supported by and incorporating Auslan into their toolkit, our SLPs equip families and clients with the tools and strategies to communicate confidently.
