Supporting Queensland Government to make homes accessible

Published on: 2nd February 2026

Deaf Connect is proud to stand alongside more than 50 organisations from across the disability, housing and community sectors in supporting the Queensland Government’s decision to retain the Liveable Housing Design Standard (LHDS) in the National Construction Code.

On 21 January 2026, the Queensland Government announced that liveable housing design requirements will remain part of building rules in Queensland. This decision supports the creation of safer, more accessible and practical homes for people across the state.

Accessible housing for Deaf community members and Auslan users is incredibly important. A home that is safe and easy to move through creates a stronger foundation for communication access, independence and wellbeing.

We acknowledge the Queensland Government for listening to the community, families, carers and sector organisations, and for recognising the long-term value of inclusive housing design.
