KEY INFORMATION

To get an idea of our next course’s locations, days and times, we suggest you look at the Program Factsheets in the ‘Course Documents’ tab.

Use the tabs below to toggle through the various categories of information.

Units of Competency

PSP30218 – Certificate III in Auslan is made up of six (6) units.
Three (3) of them will be completed as part of your Certificate II in Auslan:

  • PSPLAN001 – Converse in Auslan at a basic user level
  • PSPLAN002 – Compare the fundamental differences between Auslan and English structure
  • PSPLAN003 – Source information on Deaf culture, and communicate according to Deaf protocol

You will need to successfully complete the remaining three (3) units in order to attain your Certificate III in Auslan:

  • PSPLAN004 – Converse in Auslan at an independent user level (familiar subjects)
  • PSPLAN005 – Analyse the structure of Auslan signs
  • PSPLAN006 – Research the development of educational and social conditions for Australian Deaf communities

More information about this qualification and its units can be found on training.gov.au.

Study Options

We offer the following study options:

  1. Blended (combination of face-to-face in classroom and online), or
  2. Online only (virtual classroom via Zoom).

Face-to-face and live online sessions are timetabled in your Course Guide (in the ‘Course Documents’ tab).

Pathway Continuity

Please note that we may NOT be able to guarantee continuity of delivery after this qualification. This means that:

  • whilst you MAY be able to enrol in a face-to-face class close to where you live for this qualification, a similar offering may NOT be available for the next qualification. In this case, you MAY need to consider an online offering if you choose to continue on the pathway.
  • if you choose to defer your enrolment from a course, a similar offering may NOT be available next year and your deferral will be at risk of expiry.
Support Services

Deaf Connect will provide weekly Auslan Practice Sessions for students to practice their signing skills. Subject Matter Experts will also provide extra tutorials on the theory units.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend. Check your timetable in your Course Guide to find out when the sessions are.

Deaf Connect may also make reasonable adjustments to accommodate students with disability, where possible. The adjustment made will be determined on a case-by-case basis after assessment of the individual need(s) of the student.

You can find more information in our Support Services Policy or in our Student Handbook.

Outcome

On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the main points when clear, standard language (which for sign language users may be a locally used variation) is used and the topics are familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.,
  • Deal with most situations likely to arise where sign language is used,
  • Produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interest,
  • Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Your enrolment in the course does not guarantee that you will successfully complete or that you will obtain a particular employment outcome where it is outside of Deaf Connect’s control.

You must have successfully completed all units in order to be issued with an AQF [Australian Qualifications Framework] certification documentation for PSP30218 – Certificate III in Auslan.

Entry

There are no occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements applicable to this qualification at the time of publication on the National Register.

However, Deaf Connect requires students to successfully complete PSP20218 – Certificate II in Auslan prior to enrolling in this course.

Deaf Connect may also require you to undergo a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Test and/or a Digital Learning Readiness Questionnaire as part of the enrolment process.

Note: Effective use of your arms, hands, and fingers is essential for Auslan. If you have a physical disability or sustain an injury that affects your ability to use these body parts, please inform us as soon as possible. This will allow us to assess how it may impact your course participation and discuss potential accommodations, including extensions or deferrals.

More information will be provided to you upon assessment of your eligibility for your course of choice.

You can find more information in our Enrolment Policy or in our Student Handbook.

Duration

One semester is 19 weeks – 1 week for Online Orientation + 18 weeks.

Classes will be 5 hours per week (over 1 day or 2 evenings). You will also be expected to watch a 1 hour pre-recorded video each week.

However, outside the scheduled classes, you are expected to complete approximately 15 to 20 hours per week for individual study, online learning, your own review of signs and information from class activities, research and preparation of assessments, and community contact.

Auslan Only Weekend (AOW)

Students will also be required to attend a residential Auslan Only Weekend (AOW), which will also be attended by members of the Deaf Community. AOWs are held in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

The AOW forms part of your course and attendance is highly recommended, however, failure to attend will not impact on your ability to successfully complete the course.

Note: Whilst accommodation and meals for the Auslan Only Weekend (AOW) are included as part of your course fees, you will be responsible for covering the cost of getting to and from the venue.

You are expected to attend the AOW in the state where you reside, unless you live in a border town or outside NSW, QLD or WA, or unless you live in a state where no AOW is held – in these cases, you can choose to travel to the venue closest to you or the most cost effective AOW.

Semester 2, 2025 AOWs will take place from Friday, 21 November 2025 to Sunday, 23 November 2025.

Material & Equipment

You need to have access to the following:

  • Laptop or desktop computer with reliable internet connection
  • Filming device (webcam, handheld camera or smartphone)
  • Word processing and presentation software(s) to make presentations or complete your assessments (Microsoft Word or Google Docs and Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides)
  • PDF reader (download PDF reader for free)
  • Access to Zoom
  • Access to Moodle – instructions will be provided prior to the commencement of the course
  • Access to printer and scanner – If you are not familiar with document editing
  • Pen and notepad

Note: Our Learning Management System (Moodle) is not easily accessible from smart phones or tablets and is best accessed on a laptop or desktop computer. Due to the way our courses are structured, the Moodle App for either Apple or Android is NOT SUITABLE for studying Deaf Connect courses. You are at risk of not seeing all learning materials in full when attempting to access them via a mobile phone or tablet.

For blended courses, laptops are preferred rather than phones or tablets and you may need to hotspot from your phone. For online only courses, you MUST use a laptop or desktop computer and your screen must be of adequate size (about 22”) in order for you to clearly see your trainer and classmates. We recommend you use two monitors: one for the PowerPoint and one for your Zoom class.

Communication with Deaf Connect

Email is the primary means by which we will contact you about your course, e.g. to confirm a course once minimum enrolment numbers are achieved, or cancel if we do not receive enough enrolments.

Please ensure you enter your email address correctly at the time of enrolment.

Please also monitor your Junk folder for emails from Deaf Connect. If you do not receive an email about your course by at least the day before the scheduled start date, please contact us.

If you have general enquiries, you can contact Deaf Connect’s Student Services team during the following operating hours:

  • Phone support is available from 9:00AM to 5:00PM QLD time.
  • Email support is available any time – we will endeavour to respond within one (1) business day.

These operating hours ensure students enrolled in any state can contact us and receive live support Monday to Friday. Where a student contacts us outside of these hours, Deaf Connect will endeavour to respond within one (1) business day.
